We are pleased to invite you to participate in the world famous Battery Vehicle Society London to Brighton Renewable Energy Vehicle Run which will take place on Sunday 22nd July 2007. Vehicles run by battery, solar power, biofuel and hydrogen will be taking part.

Who we are?

The Battery Vehicle Society, founded in 1973, consists of over 300 members and we exist to encourage and assist the development of the Electric Vehicle and to widen its field of application. The Battery Vehicle Society has staged Electric Vehicle road, track, and competition events throughout its history, and members have participated in EV events worldwide.

Why a london to Brighton event?

With increasing interest in Electronic Vehicles for both city centre and wider use we would like to demonstrate the viability of the Electric Vehicle in this 62 mile historic vehicle-proving run. Participants and supporters will find the event interesting and enjoyable. So, can EVs do it? Some will manage it easily: Cedric Lynchs’ two wheeled vehicle has a range of nearly 200 miles, and other members have 4-wheeled vehicles with ranges of 70 miles plus. EVs designed just for city centre operation and with battery capacity - and therefore range to suit - will require a recharge on the way.

The route

The start will be from Central London in the morning. The lunch/charging stop will be in the Crawley/Handcross area and the finish will be at the Marina Square, Brighton Marina, Brighton, early afternoon. The route we’ll follow is our traditional one - the A23 to Crawley and then the B2115/B2036 to Burgess Hill, but we’ll then enter Brighton over Ditchling Beacon to avoid the busy A23. After arriving at Brighton Marina there’ll be a display of vehicles as part of Brighton Sunny Day 2007. The main “Events” are The Start, The Lunch/Charging Stop, and The Finish. It is not intended that vehicles will bunch together during the run although each will follow the same route and there will be opportunities to view the vehicles at various stages en route. For vehicles requiring a longer charging stop, there’ll be an “Early Start” therefore allowing longer for recharging. Use of BVS charging facilities MUST be pre-booked (entrants may make their own charging arrangements en route if they wish). All timings shown are for the lead vehicle, others will follow at one minute intervals.

The Rules

This is a “Run” for road-legal vehicles. It is to each entrant to ensure the legality of their vehicle and driver to run on the public roads and the BVS takes no responsibility for the legality of entrants. It is not a rally or a race; it is a “Run” on public roads. The “Run” is specifically for Electric Vehicles running solely on storage batteries. Hybrid Vehicles, Fuel-Cell Vehicles, or those running on Compressed Gas are not eligible for the run (although it may be possible by prior arrangement for such vehicles to join us at the finish display at the Marina Village in Brighton Marina). Any private or commercial vehicles may take part, running on any number of wheels. There will be a limit to the maximum number of vehicles that can participate, so first come first served. Assisted cycles may prefer just the 2nd part of the run from the Lunch Stop onwards. Entrants fees to the full event or any part of it is free to BVS members, otherwise £20.

Support

The BVS will be arranging the marshalling at the start as well as Lunch/Charging Stops and the finish. A Mobile Support Vehicle with Recovery/Charging Facilities is planned to be available on a first come first served basis. Communication with the organisers and the Support Vehicle will be on mobile telephone.
